Life After a Stroke

On Chuck Rhodes Out & About, he spotlights “positive people”, “positive places” and “positive events” throughout the Midstate that sometimes get overlooked.

This weeks spotlight showcase Selma Passaro, a stroke victim who will never let adversity stop her.

It is all about getting on with life, and keeping your passions strong.  For Selma, it was about getting back to a lifelong hobby after a tragedy struck…a stroke that caused Selma to lose use of her right arm. Selma says, “there is life after a stroke”…don’t give up.

Not giving up…that is exactly what this 81 year old made sure to do.  Selma missed crocheting, but without the use of her right arm it seemed like crocheting would only be a memory.  That was until her son made a stand to act as her right hand.  It took a while for Selma to make good use of her left hand, but before long she was back to crocheting every week at the Mechanicsburg Senior Center.

Today, Selma Passaro has inspired many with her refusal to give into a disability.  Rhoada Shore,  who suffers from failing eye sight says, “I was so impressed…I can do any anything after I saw her (Selma).”

Selma’s advice for those with similar challenges: Set a goal, keep a sense of humor, and surround yourself with friends.
